A normal wire may have a small area where the metal wire is exposed or has frayed or is damaged from over-heating. Nicked insulation is caused by a wire being pulled across the sharp metal conduit edge after installation. When experts found any nicked wire, they merely tape over the area with electrical tape to prevent metal wire contact with another piece of metal wiring, metal conduit, or metal box. But there are electricians that replace the damaged section of the wiring.
Rodent attack is also a risk. Rodents such as squirrels and mice may chew the insulation of wire that results in exposing the bare metal wire. You must fix these areas and perform a rodent control program to prevent rodent attack in future.
Frayed or deteriorated insulation is also a damaged insulation. Older homes may have wires with damaged or frayed insulation. It is a safety concern and you must address it. If you are having older home and haven’t replaced wiring for years, you must check them because your tube wiring, or rubber insulated wires are subject to having damaged insulation.
Electrician can repair the frayed wire easily and instantly. The frayed areas are not really big.Do remember that UL doesn’t list electrical tape as a sheathing product for electrical wire.You can even perform heat shrink tubing method to fix the insulation of the damaged wire at home.
Heat shrink tubing is a special plastic designed for repairing a damaged wire. It shrinks up when you apply heat to it. Professionals use a butane heat torch with this tubing; however, old wiring’s insulation jacket is flammable, so you can even use hair dryer on “high” mode. Hair dryer option is time consuming, but it works well.
